Guinness Beer Bread

Another way to use one of my favorite baking techniques: Beer in place of yeast in bread! This one features Guinness and a touch of chocolate. Sounds a little crazy, I know! Don't knock it until you try it!

Not only is this bread great just to nibble on with some sweet butter, it makes a great base for bread pudding. It is the bread I used in the Car Bomb Bread Pudding featured yesterday!

Guinness Beer Bread
ingredients:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 c whole wheat flour
  • 1 Tbsp baking powder
  • 3 Tbsp dark brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp chocolate syrup
  • 12oz Guinness Extra Stout
  • 3 tablespoons butter
directions:
  1.  Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Lightly grease a 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flours, baking powder, and sugar. Sift well with fork. Pour in beer and chocolate syrup, stir until a stiff batter is formed, but don’t over mix (best to just use your hands).
  3.  Scrape dough into prepared loaf pan. Melt butter and drizzle across top of dough.
  4. Bake for about 40 or so minutes or until a toothpick inserted into center of the loaf comes out clean.

Beer bread is my favorite! We live at a really high altitude and getting yeast and leavening ingredients to work right is a pain sometimes so I love experimenting with this recipe by trying new beers. This one was my favorite so far.

I need to research for a gluten-free BEER bread recipe. I love making beer breads but obviously I need to re-think this since Hubby has a wheat allergy.

My own suggestion is GF bread mix with GF beer.
